Subject: September (revised) Update - Center for Sustainability

After a devastating hurricane season, we look forward to working with you and your students to expand campus sustainability efforts. The Center for Sustainability needs your active input and involvement to flourish at LIU Post. The Center’s primary purpose is to give students opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research.

Last spring, the LIU Post Center for Sustainability began a campus conversation to promote a new undergraduate degree in environmental sustainability. This interdisciplinary degree will strengthen students’ skills in sustainability science and focus those skills on entrepreneurial projects. This fall, the Center will assist the Department of Earth and Environmental Science as the Department further develops this concept. We thank the many faculty members who submitted course proposals for the new degree program, but we have not yet defined the specifics of this curriculum. Please continue to talk with us about your specific interests in this still developing degree program.

The above Dropbox file provides an overview of the Center, its mission and goals. In addition, there are 2.5-pages of text on the proposed new degree program. We particularly welcome your comments and assistance on strengthening the included goals and objectives for the degree. There is also a two-page Executive Summary for a draft LIU Post Climate Action Plan. We hope that Faculty Council can work with the Center on this exciting Climate Action opportunity for LIU Post.

Monthly campus meetings on sustainability will begin Oct 4 (Wednesday) and resume the following month (November 1) during Common Hour in Pell Hall 231. As noted on the Dropbox file, subcommittees will take responsibility for key topic area. We welcome faculty and student engagement and leadership on topics related to sustainability. We are happy to partner with you on events and projects. The best way to stay informed about our activities is by joining our listserve. The Brooklyn campus is also moving forward with their own sustainability initiatives. This semester we hope to talk with Brooklyn about creating new partnerships between the two campuses.

And, please join us Tuesday our October 24 for our Student Farm ribbon cutting event, located by the Facilities Services/Public Safety Building.

Lastly, in April, the campus hosted its 7th annual sustainability awards and dinner event. Congressman Steve Israel was the keynote speaker. He touched upon the importance of climate change for national and global security as well as the many global opportunities now available enhance human development through sustainable technologies and entrepreneurship.
