Thanks Billy,
That’s a great idea and I will bring it up at the meeting. Of course it is possible that we have a plan since we are a NY State arboretum and the state may have required a plan in order to designate the campus as such.
Best, Joan

If a Tree Care Plan is something the committee would like to implement in the future, a quick Google search yielded a number of schools with Tree Care plans and/or policies.
Here’s just a sample.

Hopefully members from facilities services can attend the meeting on Tuesday and give us more insight into these decisions. On Tuesday, we can explore some options for ensuring our voices are including in campus landscaping practices. We really do not have any type of campus sustainability plan to guide future decision making. So there are both short term and longer term goals to consider. Inviting an arborist and landscape architect to walk the campus with us and offer suggestions would make for an excellent use of our time in coming weeks.

This is the first I’ve heard about this and it’s truly upsetting, especially as decisions like this are irreversible. Isn’t Bill Kirker on this list or is there someone else we could engage to at least enter into dialogue with the administration about tree removal?

And do everything to stop this destruction of both trees and habitat. Perhaps the university could be persuaded to get a consultant from Planting Fields to help make rational decisions with respect to landscape. Killing mature trees is probably a criminal act. I hope so. Joan

We should also find out how many other trees are scheduled to be cut down.

Dear Scott,
when I drove onto campus today, I was horrified to discover the magnificent holly trees next to Roth Hall being ripped out. These were mature trees possibly 50 years old full of red berries that sustain birds and beautify the campus. They were always beautifully pruned and gave everyone who works in that building great pleasure. The sight absolutely brought me to tears.
How can we possibly profess to be involved in sustainability on campus if we can't even protect the trees that live here and the birds that nest in them and feed on the berries.
What kind of holiday party can we possibly have in light of the destruction of the very trees that celebrate and symbolize the season. I am deeply ashamed of an administration that shows neither respect for nature nor for beauty.
Others have shared in grief and mourning all day long as they passed by the building and found the trees murdered.
As far as I'm concerned, every party related to this holiday season should be cancelled.
Joan

Hi,
I heard that several people wanted to attend our Dec 2nd NYC event; unfortunately, the event has to be rescheduled for 2017. We are not having the Dec 2 holiday party.
When I get additional information, I will circulate that to you all. Thanks. Prof. Scott Carlin
