Why the office is looking more like a Pre-K classroom
Working in small groups, continually sharing and negotiating with others is typical in Pre-K, says David Deming, a professor of education at Harvard. And that's what today's workplace calls for, too.
A New York Times feature<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WkfFDcsufYQd5B1vLgNqx1_AnkKyGhwKwWs29rOHdGFkHc-Itp-BHwRuMRBTSDGn2U_E8OqP8toYUOdkS0kICabnb2quBvQBDd_YEkP5VmylGf4cAbcJzT8D2uM_x0opy6HZ1v7dSzFIXrdgMptIHmZiMhC3FexbFh_zb0Qvo_-jV0jlo9ZJAL27YQ330hINf_1jtVCifnK8Qq8ycXbulUM3N_5JjbzQtJLg75CWCQaOtyYEPMcA7Po4gj_2p0WVd1m85axMqhvqCOoTENZm1273gWdtgG5Ocugkk_IpQXY=&c=5hsWEX5RigUsw_ev7Mu-I05pOJ2H9272aFzg5d1f4WHcZIMw1YiB0w==&ch=amAtcvQEr1FAa-ZlyKdN32LSmbP6vyGPr9wkdDSwc0vzC_9SE3rkkw==> covered the work of Deming and other researchers who have studied the demand for different types of workers. Jobs requiring social skills grew 24 percent between 1980 and 2012, according to Deming. At the same time, he found a decline in jobs that don't necessarily require teamwork, such as garbage collecting or engineering.
The feature's conclusion: "skills like cooperation, empathy and flexibility have become increasingly vital."
Suggestions from the field:
"Every teacher should read this book"
The book is The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton. It's recommended by Debra

Shalom, Principal of Great Neck's Parkville Early Childhood Center. "This book changed the way we approach our children," she says.
Using stories and examples, The Power of Our Words outlines how to use language effectively to deal with challenging situations in the classroom. It was first published in 2007, but is now out in a revised second edition available from amazon.com <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WkfFDcsufYQd5B1vLgNqx1_AnkKyGhwKwWs29rOHdGFkHc-Itp-BH5P45j43-doF6nc3jTBS0UBjl87Dg5-TknUTD1pcmtapoYnl3eSFy2E6uCk9vk7iuXU7OlYaNRHkjJvhkGmkGmqLSVqLugDJYleUXVRbrzLep6xVcPxDl_YLqDvr5Hggax2yY8lMLCOpMWC4ZTUMKbsqgHFX6pYogIWcwu5-gjt4vHKA0tysGWyqT0XP5wGfym786Hpo8C9IQ1RYMOyqhzphUtLZ7cAj5wcL_9Qlt9Nmp4BbHeMbUrmnPWJpBXxyMokljV9vFPGID7GfJ1aXtTP8wBTfJkLobJJTxmcac32iHlKYqEg8667NA90JsazM3w==&c=5hsWEX5RigUsw_ev7Mu-I05pOJ2H9272aFzg5d1f4WHcZIMw1YiB0w==&ch=amAtcvQEr1FAa-ZlyKdN32LSmbP6vyGPr9wkdDSwc0vzC_9SE3rkkw==> and other sellers.

Quick Links: what's new in policy and funding
"How New York Made Pre-K a Success"
That's the title of an op-ed piece in last Sunday's New York Times.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WkfFDcsufYQd5B1vLgNqx1_AnkKyGhwKwWs29rOHdGFkHc-Itp-BHzbqxMy0116zpMCsYMjHQiQht7Ju_jnJAkCU1lKdAz5m5OzayVf4FvcNH0ie717WFVtq7e3tI0VYdXwLEvrCbpE2UYOzleNZ8p-dLKd1URJ5RLljoJQPumEwrIGD4_8erdftu2v1OG4-GO3btf7zhU6iqsj2RVPGWx0RY8HMR5CBAn9Ec2okLzcUBsIFyoaaDSnD8cIi5llOSlsbj3BIkomm2SZcv47Gb-cByYU5TMjj&c=5hsWEX5RigUsw_ev7Mu-I05pOJ2H9272aFzg5d1f4WHcZIMw1YiB0w==&ch=amAtcvQEr1FAa-ZlyKdN32LSmbP6vyGPr9wkdDSwc0vzC_9SE3rkkw==> Why was the author--a professor of public policy--so impressed? Reasons include the fact that the city's universal Pre-K mixes poor and middle-class children; funding is sufficient to support a quality program; and there's continual data collection and analysis.
President Obama's budget gives early learning a boost.
In his FY2017 spending proposal just unveiled last week, the President has included roughly $19.5 billion for early childhood programs. For details, check out the
First Five Years Fund blog.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WkfFDcsufYQd5B1vLgNqx1_AnkKyGhwKwWs29rOHdGFkHc-Itp-BH72tNySh1dwg35Gc0rCpmuQNbtbGCcaXoLJzWRDeo_t13SpEHVvoiBKwPwWWNmkYJnAqLrWU8SLIULSA0n3TYNQmkxaBK3m1XV0aUQFX55jm9K6dvNxMhoU=&c=5hsWEX5RigUsw_ev7Mu-I05pOJ2H9272aFzg5d1f4WHcZIMw1YiB0w==&ch=amAtcvQEr1FAa-ZlyKdN32LSmbP6vyGPr9wkdDSwc0vzC_9SE3rkkw==>
But what will the next president do?

"The most portentous public policy mistake"
That's what Vice President Biden's former chief economist calls our lack of investment in early childhood programs.
