October 31, 2016 – Minutes Sustainable Post Committee
Next Meeting:
Nov 10 (Thursday) Hunt Room – 4 to 5:15 pm
Attendance: Scott Carlin, Carol Boyer, Kay Sato, Vic DiVenere, Jennifer Brown, Kay Sato, William Achnitz, Panagiotis Sacoulas, Sarah Pomerenke, Laura Harwell, Christopher Roerden, Erica Ferrara, Allie Wise, Daniel Shelton, Steven Rodriguez.
Proposals for New Subcommittees
1. Earth Day Committee – Plan for annual dinner and related events.
2. Campus Transportation
3. Student Need Assessment (work with Center for Health Living & Newman Club) - problems with student hunger/malnutrition, homelessness, and other hardships
4. Student Learning – Assessing and Expanding Sustainability in campus courses; Create a Sustainability Leadership Certificate Program
5. STARS – Campus Sustainability Assessment
6. Campus Food Production – Campus Farm, compost, and other proposals; student businesses
7. Campus Recycling – Recycling has been managed by Student Activities in the past, but the program is now not operating and needs to be reconstituted.
8. Social Media – The new Sustainability Club has a Social Media committee; this committee could be the same people.
LIU has renewed its membership with AASHE.org; everyone at LIU Post can get a free account with their LIU.edu email address. AASHE provides access to many resources re: sustainability initiatives at other campuses.
Farm Proposal-
* Each Post 101 class could participate in a campus farm; each student could focus on one crop.
* Prof. DiVenere would incorporate permaculture elements into the campus farm
* Start with a small demo garden
Announcements:
Nov 7 Tour of Geothermal with Prof. Boyer. (Common Hour; meet at the Honor’s Office.)
Prof. Boyer would like to do a spring presentation on new financial tools, such as sustainable bonds. She will present at West Point this fall.
Prof. Carlin will present on global citizenship and climate change in South Korea next week.
Erica will submit her application to create a Sustainability Club this week to Student Activities. The club will have a number of committees including Event Planning, Social Media, PR, Marketing. The Club will have traditional officers plus committee chairs; members will serve on multiple committees to enhance communication across the committees.
