Interns will all be meeting together beginning on Thursdays from 3:00-5:00 on campus. If you have class until 3:20, you can still participate. This project will engage Westbury High School high school students in writing alongside college students, writing their stories together, building bridges across age, situation, and culture. Westbury school administrators love this program and usually attend the culminating event at which some students read their final work. It's a great networking experience and a terrific way for an education student to gain confidence with diverse populations working alongside the high school students. More information about Herstory can be found at http://www.herstorywriters.org/ Some of the topics that have come up at past workshops include: Addiction Poverty Immigrant rights Teen pregnancy Gang involvement Violence Healing through writing Economic, cultural, racial, and educational diversity Juvenile justice system Inequalities in the healthcare system Our campus, located on the historic Gold Coast of Long Island, is privileged to be in a surrounding area of wealth and seemingly unlimited resources. However, drive 15 minutes away from campus and you can find poverty stricken areas with high school students who do not enjoy the comforts and security of prosperity. Herstory writers workshop brings together people from all socio-economic environments to write their stories alongside one another. Having Herstory come to work on our campus is a fantastic opportunity, please help us to grow our partnership with Herstory as we are honored to have been chosen as a site for their work with youths who come from diverse backgrounds in our surrounding community. If interested, email the following information to Glynis.Pereyra at liu.edu Participating students will be registered for ENG 101 or SOC 92. Graduate students are free to participate as well and should contact me if interested.
