I’ve received questions from several people about the criteria used to close academic programs. I attended a Dean’s meeting this morning and was able to get a more detailed response. There were a number of stages to the process of making these decisions, and
the process has been ongoing since the fall semester. The first step was identifying programs that have had five or fewer new students enrolled since Fall 2010. In some cases, there may have been a few more than five over the past five years; however, five
or fewer was the starting point. From the initial identification of a program having as fewer than five students enrolled since 2010, the following considerations may have been applied depending on the program:<o:p class=""></o:p></div>

In all cases, chairs and program directors were consulted by their deans about the program closings. In some cases, programs that were originally slated to be closed were kept open because of the considerations above. For example, some had courses in their
curriculum that served other areas and it therefore made sense to keep them open. My understanding is that the decisions were sometimes very nuanced and part of a process that was still going on up until late last week when I received the list.<o:p class=""></o:p></div>
