Dear Colleagues,

As we all know, LIU Post faculty here are committed to the continued strength and importance of the liberal arts in sciences in the education of all of our students, regardless of major. The core revitalization committee has made some
progress in redesigning the core curriculum to help all departments be better able to meet the change in credit requirements from 129 to 120.

In the efforts to support and strengthen the developing of students who are liberally educated, SVPAA Kane has asked the Faculty Council to recruit a faculty contingent for a task force which will work together to develop a written and
collectively understood vision of what it means to be liberally educated. Further, this task force will help develop a collective understanding of the purpose of a liberal arts core curriculum.
It is hoped that faculty from all schools and colleges will be represented on this committee.

Discussions about learning goals, to be informed specifically by best practices described and defined by institutions such as the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), will be central to the work of this group. In
particular, identifying the goals which are most important to the majority of programs across the institution, and determining how these are addressed and assessed within our liberal arts core and general education courses, will be important.

The focus does not end, though, with the work of this committee studying best practices related to vision, purpose, and goals of the liberal arts core. Indeed, one of the goals for this group is to discuss ways in which the campus faculty
can, collectively, help students to understand the importance of a liberal education both as the foundation for their professional degrees and as majors in their own right.

Discussions about how to develop synergies between liberal arts programs and between liberal arts programs and professional schools to best meet the needs of the students in those programs will be central to the work of the committee.

Please respond to your faculty council communication representative if you are interested in participating on this task force. Please respond by October 31st. Once the Faculty Council has a handle on the number of interested
faculty, we will determine how to best proceed.
