UFS meeting, March 18, 2016

The meeting began with a discussion of the members from each campus who are continuing and whose terms are up. At the Post campus, concern was expressed because it appears that there may be many empty seats. In particular, there are six
members who will be leaving the UFS from Post. Currently, there is one nomination to fill one of these empty seats. (If you or someone you know is interested in running, please be in touch with Michele Dornisch, chair of the elections committee.)

The discussion then turned to the upcoming Student Affairs Board of Trustees meeting. There is a meeting of this group that will be held March 29 at 4 in Brooklyn. This meeting is to replace a meeting in November that was canceled.
If you are available to attend this meeting, please let Nancy Frye know.

Next, the issue of mass email from George Baroudi regarding technology in the classroom was raised. The question was raised of whether this was helpful. The broad consensus was that, although this is a step in the right direction, we need
more faculty input before technology changes are made in classrooms.

Next, the symposium was raised. The uniform consensus was that this was a helpful event, but that we now need input from administration in terms of what they want to see from APR and their vision of it, as well as what data we can get.
Jeff Kane and Kathy Gill will be invited to a follow-up meeting about this.

Next, issues related to the Board of Trustees were raised. First, the idea of suggesting Karen Hopkins as a potential Board member was raised. There was consensus that this was a good idea. Karen Hopkins worked at BAM from 1979 until her
retirement in 2005. She was then a member of the Board of Regents from 2006 to 2010.

Discussion turned to the issue of how best to foster actual communication with the Board and the administration. It was noted that there is a sense of frustration because faculty are trying to work with the administration on various issues
and are not feeling as though we are being met even half-way. UFS members noted that it might help to create a bulleted list of concrete steps that faculty have worked on, with the response (or lack thereof) from administration. This is something that may
be created, moving forward. It was noted also that there is difficulty in being able to find faculty to attend various Board of Trustees subcommittees (such as the Student Affairs subcommittee) because faculty need to attend the meetings in person, which is
often difficult given schedules.

A lengthy discussion ensued regarding the mood on campus and the frustration/learned helplessness on the part of faculty and how best to bring this to the attention of the Board. (No clear ideas came out – so let Nancy Frye know if you
have ideas)
