to allocate resources as deemed best for the University. The professional schools have conducted self-studies for years using pretty much the same reflective assessment as we would ask in our review. If we were interested in using the information to take
action, we could have done so long ago.

In discussions with faculty regarding APR, a relatively consistent concern has been raised. People seem to be concerned that the process will lead to departments doing work to provide the administration with contextual information on their departments, but
that the transparency won't go the other way, in terms of information about how decisions are ultimately made.

One thing that might help to alleviate this concern (or skepticism) is an overture of transparency on the part of the administration. One issue that has been raised recently by faculty is that of new lines. People generally understand that all the requests
for new lines cannot be honored, but it might be helpful if information about the requests could be shared. For instance, would it be possible to share with the faculty the number of new lines that were requested across the university and the number of new
lines that were granted, as well as the general sorts of criteria that were used in making these decisions? I believe this information was shared at a dean's meeting, but the information does not always get passed on to the faculty.
