Dear all

This email contains questions for the Town Hall meeting on Admissions and Enrollment on March 1st at 12:30 in the Tilles Atrium. Please come and voice your concerns and questions as well. Thanks,

Questions for Town Hall on Admissions and Enrollment
Recruitment and Marketing
1) It has been noted that students are being recruited more strategically through targeting specific geographic or demographic areas. How much recruitment are we engaging in across the country and abroad? How have those decisions been made, in terms of which geographic areas or student demographics to target? Are the targeted regions and demographics the same across programs, or how are programs related to targeted areas? For instance, are CACD programs marketed more in some areas, and CEIT programs marketed more in other areas? If so, how are those decisions made?
2) Is LIU mainly seeking to attract students from Long Island, or is there a vision of primarily attracting students from elsewhere in the nation and world?
3) What are the specific processes to recruit students, and do they differ across academic area or college/school? What are the specific plans... beyond open houses, which do not seem that fruitful?
4) What are the target projections for next year and in five years and ten years out? Is the plan to build back to previous numbers or is there an expectation of fewer students overall?
5) What kind of marketing materials are we distributing to prospective students? Are these brochures or online material? How do they reflect particular majors and colleges? How are we publicizing the change to the 120 credit undergraduate degree? This is a NEWS item that should be in all the LI papers and media.
6) Why have my two sons not received a single piece of mail from LIU Post over the past two recruitment seasons; one was a high school senior last year, one is a high school senior this year? Or, is our mailing campaign to prospective students adequate and do we have any current strategies to improve it?
7) What is our strategy for Honors College recruitment? Most of the high end scholarships do not require students to participate in the Honors College, which means that we need other significant scholarships that are attached to joining the Honors College and completing its requirements in order to graduate with an Honors College diploma citation.

8) Can faculty have a list of 15 programs across campus that might be specifically targeted for recruitment and marketing due to their current popularity as well as the ability of accepted students to be successful in completing these programs and in getting jobs or into grad school?

9) What are the target enrollments for Fall 2017 for the campus overall broken down by first-year and transfer students? Are they broken down by graduate versus undergraduate and by college or school? How are these numbers compared to the current numbers in each area?

10) How does the administration analyze the need for resources to be put into recruitment and marketing beyond current numbers? That is, if a field or area is expected to have growth in job opportunities, how do they watch for that?

11) According to minutes from the April 22, 2016, meeting on Admissions, you stated that the "goal is to bring the number of incoming students up to the size of the 2010 entering class.” The 2010 freshman class was around 800, but we ended up with around 550 students, including 100 PAS students. What is the target for this year, and are we in a better position to meet it? What were the obstacles last year to meeting the target enrollment of 800 students?

12) How does the administration analyze the need for resources to be put into recruitment and marketing beyond current numbers? That is, if a field or area is expected to have growth in job opportunities, how do they watch for that?

Faculty Collaboration with Admissions
1) There currently appears to be little collaboration taking place between faculty and admissions concerning recruitment strategy and the planning of recruitment events. Would the leadership in the Admissions Office be willing to work directly with the Faculty Council and Admissions Committee to improve collaboration in this area?
2) Enrollment events need to be publicized well in advance in order for faculty and students to plan their involvement. The events themselves are not sufficiently “academic” to compete with the other colleges on Long Island. How can faculty and academic units have direct input into the programming of these events?
3) How can we get more students in degree programs if the university does not advertise them and if departments are not allowed to advertise them? Or, how does the university advertise degree programs and how can faculty collaborate with admissions to improve this process?
4) Open houses and on campus recruitment events often seem haphazardly thrown together, and it is not clear how appealing/attractive they are. On several occasions I have taught “sample classes” to just a handful of students, sometimes to just one or two. Is there a coherent vision for these events? If so, what is this vision? How can faculty better collaborate with admissions to develop this vision and develop more successful recruitment events?

Admissions Staffing

1) Who is working in admissions and what sort of background do they have that can explicitly contribute to the recruitment process?

2) What training do our recruiters have before they go into the field to represent the various colleges on our campus? It is important that recruiters have detailed information about academic majors, programs, and requirements.
3) Can we have a directory and flow chart of enrollment services and admissions?
Enrollment and Financial Questions
1) What is the difference in enrollment (in %) for both undergraduate and graduate students by campus for the following periods?

AY 14-15 compared to AY 13-14

AY 15-16 compared to AY 14-15

AY 16-17 compared to AY 15-16.

2) How will the suspending of academic programs that overlap with other programs affect enrollment? Has there been any analysis about how each program that is being suspended aligns with other programs and may affect course level enrollments such that courses cannot run and therefore we will lose even more programs and certainly more students?

3)With the understanding that a certain amount of money comes in (or is lost) with each credit that a student registers for, depending on scholarship allocation and other factors, what is the average amount that is brought in (or lost) per student or per credit at Post? Also, what is the range of this? That is, what is the least amount that is brought in (or the most that is lost) per student, and what is the highest amount that is brought in (or the least that is lost) per student?

4) How does the money coming in compare to the needs of the campus, in terms of payroll, and also in terms of campus upkeep?

5) Does the university think it can sustain the current numbers? How long before it is impossible to do so?

6) Is there any intention of increasing scholarship funding to students as the financial situation for the university improves?
