The Special Value of Group Supervision in Countertransference Analysis

Paul Geltner, DSW

Identifying objective (or induced) countertransference is often crucial to understanding the dimensions of the patient's experience that they are unable to put into words. Group supervision is a particularly effective setting in which to apprehend objective countertransference because group members can pick up aspects of the countertransference that both the therapist and an individual supervisor can miss. This workshop will combine a demonstration of group supervision with a presentation of the major features of a comprehensive model of counter-transference analysis. Demo group members will be volunteers from the audience.

Presenter Bio:
Paul Geltner, DSW is the author of Emotional Communication: Countertransference Analysis and The Use of Feeling in Psychoanalytic Technique. He has been the Director of Psychoanalytic Education at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center, and has taught at the Center for Modern Psycho-analytic Studies, The Colorado Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, the Northern Rockies Psychoanalytic Institute, and the New York University School of Social Work. He practices in New York City, specializing in individual and group supervision of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists.
