Saturday, November 21st 9:00am to 12:00pm.
This workshop will review the persistence of disproportionately high rates of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) and will encourage participants to think about ways to address risk taking and risk reduction with clients. Although the fear of HIV looms large for MSM, many do not take effective preventive measures. We will survey relevant data about condom use and share information about attitudes toward condoms that we’ve gleaned from our work and our own lives. We will also discuss the use of Truvada as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, a potentially game-changing HIV prevention tool that has stirred up controversy and about which individual men who have sex with men are sometimes ambivalent.
Topics covered along the way include HIV 101 info on transmission and prevention, including the risks associated with specific sexual behaviors, and getting a relevant sexual risk history without jumping through hoops. Information on access to testing and PrEP for un- and under-insured clients will also be shared.
About the presenter:
Daniel Chiarilli has helped direct the Gay Health Advocacy Project, which coordinates HIV treatment, testing, and prevention, and provides sexual health peer counseling at Columbia University’s Morningside campus student health service, since 2005. He is co-author of a study on the prevalence of asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among MSM patients at Columbia Health and has consulted with dozens of students interested in PrEP. Daniel has a Ph.D. in Musicology from Columbia, where he occasionally teaches in the undergraduate Core Curriculum.
