When Three (or More) Is No Longer a Crowd: Clinical Encounters with Polyamory

Dates: June 3, 10, 17, 24, 2015. 1:45pm- 3:15pm

Location: Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, 1841 Broadway, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10023.

Whether presenting with an open relationship or desiring our help to construct one, couples increasingly are using psychotherapy to explore and manage polyamory. Given the silence on the topic in graduate and postgraduate training, psychotherapists often feel unsure how to proceed. Countertransference can be a challenge for therapist and patient alike. Using case material, this course will offer theoretical frames and clinical techniques in working with polyamory in couple treatment. It will illustrate the integration of psychodynamic, systems, and cognitive behavioral approaches. It will pay special attention to the therapist’s use of self including how to learn from and utilize countertransference.

Suzanne Iasenza, PhD is on the faculties of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and the Postgraduate Program in Couple and Family Therapy at Adelphi University's Derner Institute. She also teaches in the workshop series at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. She is co-editor of two books: Lesbians and Psychoanalysis: Revolutions in Theory & Practice (1995) and Lesbians, Feminism, and Psychoanalysis: The Second Wave (2004). Her most recent article entitled: “What is Queer About Sex: Expanding Sexual Frames in Theory and Practice” was published in the journal Family Process (2010). She maintains a private practice in psychotherapy and sex therapy in NYC.

Cost: $75 for current students, $200 for members of ICP community, $250 for others
