Dear Students,

As we enter the one week mark since the landing of Super Storm Sandy, I am aware that our entire community and specifically, our LIU Counseling Program community, are grappling with what this storm has meant, continues to mean and how that meaning will transform as we all work toward collective relief and recovery.

Notable about our profession is the dual role of experiencing life challenges while at the same time being charged to help and assist others. Perhaps this is where your role as healer is defined. The effects of this storm affect us all in different ways. Whether you are currently dealing with harsh realities and are in desperate need of resources for yourself and your loved ones, or are working in the trenches to support friends, family and/or clients on practicum/internship or in your work, there is a great need for resources and reliable information.

To that end I am sharing an informational email provided by my colleagues of the New York Association of Black Psychologists (see below). It contains helpful links to connect you and/or your network with needed resources to respond to the aftereffects of this storm. Additionally, the New York Association of School Psychologists (http://www.nyasp.org/) have on their website provided helpful information with particular resources and guidance for how to support children and the school environment.

Please consult both, use and share as appropriate, and above all take care of and be patient with yourself and others as we respond to the myriad of needs that arise in times of crisis.

Be well,

wsw

It is with a heavy heart and resilient spirit that the New York Association of Black Psychologists (NYABPsi) responds to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and joins relief and recovery efforts in the NYC metro area. Since the hurricane hit, the destruction has led to a catastrophic loss of lives, homes, neighborhoods, property, essential resources, and safety. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those on the east coast who are living under immensely challenging conditions and suffering from the loss of loved-ones and basic necessities.

We must also remember that natural disasters know no boundaries. In the spirit of Pan-Africanism, let us focus our collective attention on all of those throughout the Diaspora who have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Sandy wreaked havoc in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands. More than 60 people have been killed in those neighboring countries, over 200,000 are left homeless, and life-sustaining crops were destroyed in areas with far fewer resources to restore what was lost.

There is a spirit of resilience through it all, and we are touched by the ongoing displays of generosity and collective work and responsibility (Ujima). As a people, we have historically been able to make a way out of no way. Yet, this resilience must also be met with tangible resources, swift contingency plans, and a psychological healing process as we travel the path of recovery.

As our NYC metro area faces the aftermath of an unprecedented storm, our recovery process should focus on managing disaster-related stress, restoring a sense of normalcy, and healing from loss in addition to rebuilding our communities. NYABPsi is ready to serve the community as we recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy.

* We offer below a list of useful resources (from a variety of sources) that can serve as a quick guide for New Yorkers as we pull together during this phase of relief and recovery. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and available resources change often. Feel free to distribute widely!

* We are working on community outreach efforts to support the psychological health and well-being of NYC residents. If you are a licensed mental health professional willing to partner with NYABPsi in offering time-limited, pro-bono services (assessment, referrals, and supportive counseling), please contact us at nyabpsi1 at yahoo.com<mailto:nyabpsi1 at yahoo.com>.

We wish you all the very best in the days ahead. In solidarity and spirit,

The New York Association of Black Psychologists
Board of Directors
