About StoryCorps:

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. Founded in 2003 by radio documentary producer and MacArthur Fellow Dave Isay, StoryCorps has recorded and archived nearly 40,000 interviews from more than 70,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind. We have visited all 50 states, partnered with hundreds of community organizations across the country, and earned an Institutional Peabody Award, the highest honor in broadcast journalism. Millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition, our weekly podcasts on iTunes, and the stories posted on the Listen pages of our website. Our animations have been featured on PBS’s flagship documentary series POV and the YouTube homepage and were nominated for an Emmy. Our two books, Listening Is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project, andMom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps, were New York Times Bestsellers.

Position Overview:

StoryCorpsU is piloting a school year-long, college readiness program for high school students.

During the 2011-2012 school year, StoryCorpsU is working with schools in three cities: New York City, St. Louis, and Washington DC. The Education Associate is responsible for ensuring that a portfolio of StoryCorpsU partners receives adequate guidance and support, and for meeting or exceeding all relevant requirements from the program’s funding contract. This position takes the lead regarding the continued improvement of the Online Resource Network, a website for sharing information and resources with StoryCorpsU partners and the general public. The Education Associate is also expected to perform high-quality work with a variety of emergent tasks.

Cultural competence and work experience with low-income and/or minority students is required for this position.

Excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, Flexible Spending Account, 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan, Employee Assistance Plan, and TransitCheks; also includes paid time off (vacation, sick leave, personal days, and holidays).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Manages a portfolio of assigned StoryCorpsU partners, principally school(s), teachers, and public television and radio station partners in cities that site StoryCorpsU, to ensure that partnership results are highly satisfactory for both the partners and StoryCorpsU
* Ensures that partner teachers and students receive adequate ongoing support and guidance over the course of the school year, including occasional trips to the partner schools
* Manages teacher and student VoiceThread accounts (an online recording tool) to maximize the number of students who complete required recordings during the school year
* Ensures that each class convenes a course culmination event in which students exhibit and discuss their work and their school year-long participation in the course
* Creates and implements a continuous quality improvement plan for the Online Resource Network that provides information and other resources to partners and the general public
* Supports two-day training events to be held for teachers during the summer of 2012
* Performs additional tasks to support the Education Department and Programs Division, as assigned.
