<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" ><tr><td valign="top" style="font: inherit;"><DIV>"When the crimes against correct spelling and correct grammar become too great I just have to act." -- Trying to stop the assault on grammar you literary vigilante? All joking aside, I do agree that the more one reads and pays attention to their readings the more likely it is that they will become aware of their own grammar and punctuation problems (the proactive learner you speak of). Of course, recommending to an already busy student that they should take some of their personal time to read more might be akin to swallowing hot coal or scrubbing one's eyes with Brillo Pads. Good luck with that. <IMG src="http://mail.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/17.gif"> <BR><BR>--- On <B>Tue, 10/27/09, Christopher Banks <I><auron130@aol.com></I></B> wrote:<BR></DIV>

<DIV id=yiv1415372335>I have at times broken the rule of not lifting the pen. When the crimes against correct spelling and correct grammar become too great I just have to act. And while I will never win any spelling bees in my life I at least know that I am spelling a word incorrectly and continuously look to rectify that problem with my handy dictionary. On a more serious note, I tell students all the time that in college you MUST become a proactive learner. Their lack of fundamental skills may not be due to any fault of their own, but it IS their responsibility to become academically ready for the classes they take. Reading is a large part of the solution. I think the key here is to explain to the student that when they enter college, they are no longer just the general public; those students must take up the responsibility of reading. <BR>

<DIV>It is quite hard to teach spelling, especially to students who don't regularly read. It's so discouraging sometimes realizing how little the general public reads and writes. Also, sometimes correcting grammatical errors is tempting as the student is reading, no?<BR> <BR>
