The entire chapter is focused on how the tutor can help the student revise their compositions (based on the professor’s feedback), but the most useful technique for processing feedback is not mentioned until the culmination of the chapter. Identifying and isolating specific types of problems (in the format of a list) is a method that could be applied to time-restricted sessions. This past week was the first time that I worked with a student who brought along a paper that was covered in the professor’s commentary. If I had read Chapter seven last week, I would have used the classifying and listing method to assist the student in his process of revision. There was a multitude of significant problems within his paper that needed to be remedied, but because it was a walk-in session, I felt more confined by time. During the session, the student and I attended to the issues in the introduction, and discussed the organization of the body of the paper. The professor’s comments were similarly themed; she found fault in the student’s level of clarity. I tried to teach the student to be self-questioning so that he could shape his paper with ease. The student seemed grateful for the help, but I was disappointed that I could not do more for him. This week I met a new student who I will hopefully work with on a regular basis; she brought along a draft of a paper for her English 14 class. Interestingly, the student’s professor had used a classifying and listing system in order to code errors in her paper.
