I felt that in reading the responses, while I am not categorizing anyone’s responses in a right or wrong category, I just feel that being that writing can be such a complex and intimidating task to take on, students can really benefit from anything that will help them. Looking back, I can now report having worked with both the reticent writer and the self-censoring writer. The writer who is introverted and the writer so overly concerned with perfecting their paper so much that they have difficulty even beginning. One very important aspect that I like about what the author did was to give clear and concise distinctions between fluency, shape and correctness. This allowed me to fully understand where the student is struggling. Often times, students who lack development and organization of thoughts also function that way with other things in their lives and organization is a big beast to tame in their thoughts alone. Writing, as free as it can be should always make sense not only to the writer but to the reader; therefore, techniques that can help visually mold one’s thoughts into a definable shape is very helpful. I found myself using the listing and mapping techniques even though I did not know their names. I find that if writers can see their ideas coming together from the scatter that they have created on paper it eases their tensions toward and over writing. In addition, listing and mapping are great ice breakers and serve outline a beginning for the introduction, body and conclusion. I must say, I have never seen heuristic techniques but find that it can be tricky at times to use. So, as a beginning tutor, I am going to stick with what works best for me for the moment. Thanks for all you do!
