As a tutor you can help writers "think aloud on paper". The notion of generating ideas, and putting them on paper , without having to worry about forming sentences seems, like a good one. Listing, mapping etc seem like good tools (although I am new to tutoring!) Linking ideas together seeing them linked together on paper and may be halpful to some students.
