Although I hate labels and generalizations, I can say that most of the “novice writers” that I’ve encountered (including friends who call me at 3 AM begging me to correct their college papers and business presentations), fall into the two categories:  reticent writers and self-censoring writers.  I also feel that Meyer and Smith hit the nail on the head when they speak addressed they concept of the mythical writer.  Many of the folks I have encountered think that writers sit hunched over a typewriter with bourbon on one side and a cigarette on the other (a la Carrie Bradshaw). They believe that if they aren’t churning out something great, they aren’t “really” writers. I also think that part of working with students, is showing them that EVERYONE is a writer, simply because they participate in the act of writing. 
                One of the biggest things that surprised me was my aversion to mapping and tree diagrams. As I read the chapter I actually felt my face tighten, and my shoulders hunch.  This shocked me because I like to think of myself as a “visual learner.” Crazy graphs and arrows everywhere seems like it would be a perfect tool for me; however, when transferring my thoughts onto paper, I prefer listing and the HDWDWW method. I think this is because my mind does most of the mapping and grouping, when it’s time to transfer ideas onto paper, I find it necessary to create a more linear structure. When tutoring my students, I must remember that not everyone’s mind works like mine.  All of these methods have validity in their ability to help students organize and generate content. I look forward to trying some of them out with my students.

Yes....It's important to bite the bullet a bit and utilize such methods for our students.

Well Christine, I agree and disagree with you. I hate hate hate....did I mention hate graphic organizers. Personally I don't use them. Although, I sort of see where the author is going with this. The graphic organizer seems to be a visual mock up of thought, similar to an outline. Some students just require everything to be displayed in front of  them. Sometimes it allows them to digest information more easily. If it gets the job done, in my opinion, let them do it. Also, tutoring is a practice filled with methods. Being that it is a practice, you of course need to put method to action to see if it works. You have seen graphic organizers don't work for you, I do as well, but for the student it may be vital. I think the author is taking a shotgun method to the methods instead of sniper's way of targeting. The author is trying to hit as many vital/non-vital points to allow for different thought and practice to come about. The book would be
 ineffective if it focused on one method.
