The bottomline for me is what's said in the second to last paragraph on the last page of reading. As a tutor you can help writers "think aloud on paper." The notion of generating ideas and putting them on paper, without having to worry about forming sentences, seems like a good one.
Listing, mapping etc seem like good tools (although I am new to tutoring!) Linking ideas together seeing and them linked together on paper may be halpful to some students. As you get into the matrix and beyond, these exercises may seem too structured for some, but maybe not for others...
